Restoration Sermon | Joseph: Purpose in the Pain | Stories of Grace

Jul 19, 2026    Mike Bernoi

What do you do when life sends you downward instead of upward? The story of Joseph in Genesis 37 through 50 is one of the most gripping narratives in all of Scripture, and it speaks directly into that question. We follow a young man who goes from being his father's favorite to being thrown into a pit by his own brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison. Yet woven through every dark chapter is a quiet, persistent truth: the Lord was with Joseph.

This message invites us to wrestle with one of the deepest tensions in the life of faith, the gap between God's promises and our present circumstances. We discover that God's providence is usually invisible until we look backward, and that the pit is never the final chapter when God is writing the story. The central big idea is both challenging and deeply comforting: God never wastes surrendered pain. What others intend for evil, God redeems for His glory, our good, and the salvation of others. If you have ever felt stuck between the pit and the palace, this is a message worth sitting with.
