Restoration Sermon | How Long, O Lord? | Out Loud

May 3, 2026    Brian Remsch

In a world where mental health struggles have reached unprecedented levels, we often find ourselves wondering if it's truly acceptable to bring our rawest emotions before God. This exploration of Psalm 13 reveals a profound truth: authentic prayer begins not with sanitized words, but with honest expressions of our deepest pain. The psalmist doesn't hold back, asking 'How long, Lord?' four times in just two verses, accusing God of forgetting him and hiding His face. What's remarkable is that this raw honesty isn't the opposite of faith—it's actually what faith looks like in the trenches. When we demand that God move, when we cry out in desperation, we're actually demonstrating belief that He exists and has the power to help. The transformation in this psalm doesn't come from changed circumstances but from a shift in focus. Even without seeing a miracle, the psalmist chooses to trust in God's unfailing love, that covenant faithfulness demonstrated throughout history and ultimately revealed at the cross. For those of us walking through valleys of depression, anxiety, or overwhelming emotions, this passage offers permission to say the silent things out loud. Faith in hard times isn't always joyful worship—sometimes it's stubborn determination to hold onto God's character when everything feels like it's falling apart.
